Who Did It? Discovering the Real "Death Angel"
Worth Remembering - from the book "Exiting Egypt"
Somewhere way back in Sunday school many if not most of us got the idea some other force a “death angel” or demon struck Egypt. Unfortunately, what most of us grew up believing is not what the Bible teaches, Exodus The LORD does not outsource His children’s freedom. 12:29. “I will go through…and fatally strike…” “I will execute judgements…” “I will pass through…” Well-meaning teachers tried to explain to little ones what they themselves could not comprehend. A good God couldn’t…or wouldn’t, right? What they failed to understand was the LORD does not outsource His children’s freedom. He does not passively delegate judgement.
Jehovah had given an oath to Abraham’s heirs. The LORD was going to save His people. No one else would get the glory. His hand would strike the enemy. The LORD Himself would make sure His children were free. Long suffering merciful warnings had been offered with nine plagues to inspire repentance. God’s righteousness and love demanded justice. How can we cry out to the Lord wondering when we will receive justice, when we will be vindicated, then, disavow the God who destroyed the firstborns? If our view of the Lord has no room for the midnight destroyer of Egypt, we are worshipping a god of our own imagination not the Lord of scripture who spoke the universe into existence. Scripture is clear; it is the LORD who took life that night, Exodus 11:4-5, 12:12-13, 23, 29. After providing opportunities for repentance and having them repeatedly rejected, it was the Creator who moved. Having loved and formed each of the lives claimed that night, God passed through the land so that the world could know and His children could be free. That is Worth Remembering.
This is a powerful truth that needs to be taken to heart. I am currently writing a piece that I will publish today that dove tails with this view. I hope you will take time to read it
As you well said, God doesn’t outsource the fulfillment of His word. Yes, it was the Lord Himself who took the firstborn that night.
